If you are a NYU student planning to study abroad, here are a few things you should know:

  • Studying abroad does not necessarily cost more than studying in New York. The cost of housing, meals, and daily living abroad is comparable and in some cases less expensive than New York City.

  • The cost of tuition and registration fees remains the same, and your NYU financial aid package applies while you study abroad. However, please note that students participating in a study abroad program through Tisch Special Programs are not eligible for work-study and resident assistant positions abroad.

  • Students who apply and qualify for financial aid will be considered for additional aid for their semester abroad.

  • Need-based and merit-based study away scholarships and grants are available through many external organizations, but it requires advance planning. In most cases, you do NOT need to have been accepted into your study away program at the time of scholarship application so do not wait!

  • Don't limit yourself to just study abroad scholarships. Reconsider some of the scholarships you may have overlooked or didn't get when first applying to NYU.

NYU Scholarships and Financial Aid

Fall and Spring Semester

All admitted undergraduate students applying for financial aid to study abroad are automatically evaluated for an additional need-based award. The Global Pathways Scholarship provides up to $4,000 per semester (depending on demonstrated need) to cover the additional costs of international study. Students will receive an award notification beginning in June (for Fall semester) and in November (for Spring semester). You must follow the regular Office of Financial Aid process for applying for need-based aid.  Additional information is available here.

The Office of Global Programs hosts in-person and virtual info sessions throughout each semester. Visit their website for specific event dates and information.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR TISCH STUDENTS

A spring study abroad scholarship has been established by a generous donor to support high-need, high-performing Tisch undergraduate students pursuing a Tisch study abroad track in the 2024-2025 academic year. The scholarship may be used for tuition, housing, and/or living expenses for Tisch students studying abroad on a Tisch track.

Eligibility: Tisch undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need and are in good academic standing with at least a 3.0 GPA.

All confirmed Tisch majors in a Tisch spring study abroad track will be considered for this partial scholarship fund. The scholarship will be awarded to high-need, high-performing students.

Summer

NYU undergraduates do not need to complete an application to be reviewed for NYU summer scholarship. All students are reviewed for federal financial aid as long as they have a valid FAFSA on file, are enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits (combined total for all summer sessions), and are otherwise eligible. Visit the Office of Financial Aid website for more information.

NYU Graduate students will be reviewed automatically by NYU Financial Aid based on enrollment of at least 6 units or more, OR fewer than 6 units with half-time equivalency.

Visiting students should check the NYU policy on financial aid for non-NYU students here.

Visiting Students

NYU does not offer scholarships to visiting students, but non-NYU students who receive financial aid from their home school are able to apply some or all of their financial aid toward studying abroad through NYU. To initiate the transfer process, visit the financial aid office at your home institution ASAP and ask to have a consortium agreement established with NYU. This allows your school to process federal aid and transfer it to NYU for a semester or year abroad.

The Office of Financial Aid of your home institution should fax the form to our Financial Aid office at (212) 995-4661. Their email is financial.aid@nyu.edu.
