Types of Gifts

Financial gifts can come in many forms.

Unrestricted Gifts

An unrestricted gift provides Tisch with discretionary funds that can be used for a range of purposes, including scholarships, new academic programs, improvement of facilities, and recruitment of faculty members. Unrestricted gifts provide stability and allow the dean to respond with flexibility to unexpected opportunities and changing circumstances.

For more information on making an unrestricted gift, please contact us.

Restricted Gifts

Restricted gifts are used for a specific purpose, according to the wishes of the donor. Many people choose to support a project that is close to their hearts. A photographer may support the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for Photo & Imaging students; a film lover may provide production funds for student films.

If you choose to make a restricted gift, consider some of the Tisch School of the Arts’ most critical needs: scholarships, film production funds, and endowed professorships.

For more information on making a restricted gift, please contact us.

Expendable Gifts

When an expendable gift is made, all the funds provided are spent depending on the donor’s instructions and/or the needs of the School (sometimes immediately, and sometimes over an extended period of time).

For more information on making an expendable gift, please contact us.

Endowed Gifts

When a donor provides an endowment gift, the funds are invested by the University, and the interest generated is spent for a purpose of the donor’s choosing. Because only a fixed portion of an endowment’s value is spent each year, this type of gift can help to fund a school, a program, a professorship, or a scholarship in perpetuity.

By providing funds on an ongoing basis, an endowment lends permanence and stability to that which it supports. It is a powerful endorsement of the School’s mission, making it possible to plan for the future with a sense of confidence. Benefactors often choose to have the program or facility that they endow named for themselves or another individual they hold in high esteem.

The various types of endowed gifts each require a minimum commitment, per the University. If you are interested in establishing an endowed fund, please contact us.

Matching Gifts

If your employer participates in a corporate matching gift program, the value of any gift you make to the annual fund of the Tisch School of the Arts (now part of The Fund for NYU) can be doubled. After making your gift, simply obtain a matching gift form from your company’s human resources office and follow the directions.

To see if your employer participates in a matching program, visit the NYU Corporate Matching page.

In-Kind Gifts

In-kind gifts are gifts of materials or services rather than money. Because the Tisch School of the Arts encompasses arts disciplines that require expensive physical resources, in-kind contributions can make a real difference in the quality of education provided to our students. Such gifts might include photography, filmmaking, or digital imaging equipment; film stock; lighting fixtures; computer hardware and software; pianos; furniture; or materials like lumber or fabric for theatrical costumes or scenic elements.

For more information on making an in-kind gift, please contact us.

Planned Giving

Planned giving benefits the School while also providing significant financial advantages to you and your family.

Bequests and retirement account beneficiary designations are flexible ways to give to NYU Tisch. A bequest can be done through a simple codicil to will. A retirement account beneficiary designation is even simpler in that it is accomplished using a form that is provided by the administrator of the retirement account. Both options are flexible in that the gifts can be changed at any time during the donor’s lifetime.

Charitable IRA rollovers are available to all persons who have reached 70 ½ years of age. This allows individuals to direct a distribution directly from their IRA’s without paying any tax that otherwise would be incurred if the person took the distribution for personal use.

Charitable gift annuities are simple contracts in which NYU agrees to pay the donor a set amount annually in return for a gift to support NYU Tisch. The amount of the payments is based upon the donor’s age at the time of the gift and is largely tax-free. In addition, the donor is entitled to a charitable deduction for a portion of the gift.

NYU Tisch is fortunate to have a great development team who can advise and guide you in achieving your financial and philanthropic goals. If you are interested in any of the gift vehicles described above, please reach out to Andrew Uriarte or Laurel Bear who work closely with the NYU Office of Gift Planning.

Naming Opportunities

A naming gift provides public recognition to the benefactor of a restricted gift, linking his or her name with the scholarship, professorship, or facility that he or she has chosen to support.  Examples include the Kanbar Institute of Film Television, named for longtime supporter Maurice Kanbar, and the Tisch School of the Arts itself, named in recognition of a major gift from Laurence Tisch and Preston Robert Tisch, and in acknowledgement of the leadership role of the Tisch family at NYU.

Naming gifts provide a way for a grateful alumnus to give something back to the School, and can also be a way to honor or memorialize a loved one. If you are interested in making a named gift, please contact us.

Tisch Parents’ Council

Connect to other Tisch parents by directing your support to the Parents’ Council.

A gift of $10,000 or more to any program or fund within the Tisch School qualifies for a 12-month membership from the date of the gift. Parents may support scholarships, career development, or an aspect of their child's department – such as production funds for the Drama or Film & TV departments.

For more information and guidance in achieving your philanthropic goals, please contact Laurel Bear.
