Sophia Wellington
Sophia Wellington is an educator, script consultant and writer with over twenty years’ experience in film and television. As an educator, Sophia has worked around the world, teaching for seven years in MA Film and Dramatic Writing at New York University Tisch Asia before returning to the London Film School where she has been Head of Screenwriting since 2017.
Sophia’s passion for storytelling came out of her interest in all areas of production. She began her career at the BBC, training on studio cameras on news and current affairs, before moving into film where she worked as a camera assistant, on features and television dramas, including Fierce Creatures, second unit on James Bond, and the last two Dennis Potter dramas; Cold Lazarus and Karaoke. An interest in editing, first sparked by her habit of sneaking into Walter Murch’s cutting room whilst a camera trainee, led to a move to postproduction. There followed several years assisting editor Barrie Vince, working with directors including Jim O’Brien, and Malcolm Mowbray.
Another change, this time motivated by the end of cutting on film, saw Sophia move into pre-production and development. Sophia joined World Productions’, newly established film department to develop a slate of films in conjunction with Sony Columbia. Helmed by Tony Garnett and John Heyman the department worked closely with Sony executive, Gareth Wigan in the development of various projects, including Eddie the Eagle and Becoming Jane.
After leaving World Productions Sophia continued development as a freelance script consultant working on a variety of projects from tales of migrant workers in Singapore, (Remittance) to high-octane thrillers in Malaysia (Polis Evo 2). Writers and Directors worked with range from emerging talent to the Oscar winning Actor and Producer, Salma Hayek Pinault.
Sophia has designed and run international screenwriting workshops in Singapore and Manilla including several workshops on Writing for Film for the independent film foundation Cinemalaya Institute (run by the award-winning director and actor Carlos Seguin Reyna). Other workshops include Pitching and Development in Cuba at the Escuela Internacional Cine y Television (EICTV). Sophia is also very proud of her work mentoring new talent and those underrepresented in the arts: running workshops for, producer Luke Schiller’s Action Film Training, The h.Club Foundation and Mouth that Roars.
