Chelsea Rae Klein

Chelsea Rae Klein is an artist and curator whose work addresses concepts of the other, violence against women, learned male-role behaviors, the queer body and the body memory including the residual and internalized impact of forced silencing, hiding and violence. Chelsea’s projects include Among Dreams, an online interactive archive and artworks that explore largely invisible histories of queer American soldiers based on interviews conducted by the artist with active duty military and veterans throughout the U.S. (2011-2015.)

In 2012, in partnership with Resolve to Stop the Violence and writer Danica Von Hartwig, Chelsea produced and co-facilitated a dream-circle and writing workshop in the SF County Jail with violent male offenders culminating in a published collaboration between artist and inmates. Chelsea was founding artistic director of Descry Arts Projects (2009-2015), a pop up exhibition, publishing and workshop project igniting imaginative social conversations through the arts with programming in both San Francisco and New York.

Notable curatorial works include Out 24 (Spaces on White, NYC, 2012); We Dream in the Daytime Too (Photobooth, SF, 2012); and The Beginning (Queens Nails Projects, SF, 2009). Chelsea is the recipient of The SF Arts Commission's Cultural Equity Granting Program’s Individual Artist Commission (2013-2014); her projects have garnered support from The UC Berkley HAAS Scholars Fund (2012); University of Colorado’s Veteran Centers (2015); and twice received award from The Zellerbach Family Foundation's Community Arts Grant (2011, 2014).

She is a visiting artist at the University of Colorado Denver (2015) and her work has recently installed with The International ArtExpo in Venice at Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi, at A.I.R. Gallery, NYU Stovall Galleries, The Cristin Tierney Gallery and Aperture Gallery. She currently lives in New York where she works managing artists archives and estates, as a curator and artist-gallery liaison.
