Ellen Kempner
Adjunct Instructor
El Kempner is the New York based vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter behind Palehound and half of Bachelor, a collaborative project with Jay Som. Since forming Palehound in 2014, they have taken their intimate, confessional vocals
and technique-heavy indie rock chops from the basements of Boston to festivals around the world. Palehound and Bachelor have both earned widespread critical acclaim in outlets such as The New York Times, Pitchfork, and NPR, which praised Kempner’s unique sound and fearless artistic direction.
Having performed as Palehound alongside some of the biggest names in indie-rock including Boygenius, Big Thief, Sylvan Esso, Lucy Dacus, Jason Isbell, Jimmy Eat World, Mitski and PUP, their livewire energy and and introspective-yet-relatable songwriting has struck a chord with fans and peers, cementing Kempner’s status as a deeply admired and widely influential artist. Kempner is also a massively revered guitarist, recently dubbed one of one of Rolling Stone’s “Greatest Guitarists Of All Time”.
