A Panel Discussion in Conjunction with Tisch School of the Arts Week of Community

Covid19, #BlackLivesMattters, protest, political upheavals, and our climate crisis are some of the issues that will be addressed in this panel of DPI community members past and present. Photography & Imaging alums Marcia Allert, Zalika Azim, Bryan Denton, Rian Dundon, Janna Ireland, Alice Proujansky, current student Eric Hart. Jr., and Professor Lorie Novak will discuss how their photographic practices and the potential of photography to address social justice issues.

    Marcia Allert

    DPI '97, Moderator

    Marcia Allert joined The Dallas Morning News as Director of Visual Journalism in October 2016 and oversees a team of award-winning visual journalists and editors. The team works closely with the editorial department to produce compelling visual journalism that diversifies and deepens the storytelling of The Dallas Morning News. Before joining the Dallas team, she has worked in renowned newsrooms such as the Associated Press, ABC News, The New York Times, and The Daily Beast. Additionally, she is a TEDxSMU speaker and has served on the Pulitzer photo jury and has been on the judging committee for CPOY and POYi. She is currently on the board of the National Press Photographers Association.

    Zalika Azim

    DPI '14

    Zalika Azim is a New York based artist conceptualizing her practice through photography, installation, performance, text and sound. Exploring the mechanisms of personal and collective narratives, her work investigates the ways in which memory, migration, belonging and the black body are negotiated and contextualized in relation to colonized landscapes. Azim’s work has been presented nationally and internationally, including The Dean Collection, ICP, The Maryland Institute College of Art, Welancora Gallery, Dorsky Gallery, Diego Rivera Gallery, the Instituto Superior de Arte and the African American Museum in Philadelphia. Her first solo exhibition, in case you should forget to sweep before sunset (2019) was presented with Baxter Street at The Camera Club of New York. In addition to her BFA, Azim holds a BA in Social and Cultural Analysis focused in Africana, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She is currently an artist-in-residence at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation in North Carolina.

    Bryan Denton

    DPI '05

    Bryan Denton is an award-winning independent photojournalist based between New Dehli, India and Beirut, Lebanon. He is a contributing photographer with The New York Times, where his work has focused on conflict, climate change, humanitarian issues, and political transition in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Bryan has also completed commissions for publications and humanitarian organizations including TIME, Stern, The UNHCR, and Human Rights Watch. Winner of the 2016 Robert Capa Gold Medal for his work on the battle against ISIS in Iraq, and an alum of the 2014 World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass, Bryan's work has also been recognized by Visa pour l’Image, Pictures of the Year, the Chris Hondros Foundation, The Magenta Foundation, Prix-Bayeux Calvados and Foto8. His prints are held in the Sir Elton John Photography Collection, among others.

    Rian Dundon

    Rian Dundon is a documentary photographer in Portland, Oregon, and a contributor at Time, Mother Jones, New America Media and other publications. He is the author of two books, Changsha (2012) and Fan (2015).

    Eric Hart, Jr.

    DPI '22

    Eric Hart, Jr. is a twenty-year-old Georgia native creative who is currently studying Photography & Imaging at NYU Tisch School of the Arts as well as minoring in Business E.M.T at Stern. With a visual focus on Black beauty, experience, and empowerment, Hart’s photo work has been in publications such as The Washington Post, Dazed, The Root, and Art Premium Magazine. Hart is a two time Gordon Parks scholar and named one of Men's Health Magazine's 20-year-olds to watch in the year 2020. As a full-time student, Hart spends any extra time working on his visual brand, Love Hart. Created in the summer of 2018, Love Hart was developed with the purpose to raise awareness and further conversations about loving consciously through a wide range of artistic mediums. While Hart’s main focus is photography, he also is an editor and writer.

    Janna Ireland

    DPI '07

    Janna Ireland was born in Philadelphia, but has chosen Los Angeles as her home. She holds an MFA from the UCLA Department of Art and a BFA from the Department of Photography and Imaging at NYU. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Chicago, and in group exhibitions across the United States and internationally. She has been published in Aperture, The New Yorker, Harper’s, Art Papers, Vice, and The Los Angeles Times. Her first monograph, Regarding Paul R. Williams, was published by Angel City Press in 2020 and is on the shortlist for the Paris Photo/Aperture 2020 Photobooks Awards.

    Alice Proujansky

    Alice Proujansky is a documentary photographer and writer covering women and labor: birth, work, motherhood and identity. She is now working on Hard Times are Fighting Times, a project about the legacy of radical activism in her family as well as photo essays about culturally-responsive maternal healthcare. Alice's work has been published by New York Magazine, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Nation, the Boston Globe, The New Republic, Fast Company, the Guardian, Cosmopolitan, Photo District News and others. She has received support from the International Women's Media Foundation, the Magnum Foundation, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Women Photograph, the Solutions Journalism Network and the Economic Hardship Reporting Project.. Her first book, Go Photo! An Activity Book for Kids was published by Aperture in 2016. In addition to her documentary work, Alice has taught photography since 2002 and was the lead curriculum writer for On Sight, Aperture’s photography and visual literacy curriculum. Alice grew up in Greenfield, MA. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, son and daughter.
