ITP Community Day: Artist Talk with Karolina Sobecka

Karolina will talk about her work and research on emerging technologies that aim to address climate change. From proposals for large scale intervention into the climate system, to seemingly incremental advances in existing technologies, these geo-engineering approaches have migrated from the fringes of scientific research to be more centrally featured in policy and climate agreements. Karolina will talk about how arts and humanities can contribute to exploring their implications.

Speaker's bio:

Karolina Sobecka is an artist and designer working at the intersection of art, science in technology. Her recent projects investigate what drives technological innovation, and shapes the philosophy that inscribes humans in nature. Karolina’s work has been shown internationally, including at the V&A, The National Art Museum of China, MoMa Film, ZKM, WRO Biennale, Beal Center for Art + Technology, Marfa Dialogues, Science Gallery, Zero1 and ISEA, and has received numerous awards, including from Creative Capital, Rhizome, NYFA, Princess Grace Foundation, Eyebeam, Queens Museum, Vida Art and Artificial Life Awards and Japan Media Arts Festival. Karolina founded art and design studio Flightphase, has taught at Rhode Island School of Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago and University of Washington. She is a visiting scholar at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
