About the Program
Course Number: GAMES-NT 1
Future Game Designers is a FREE intensive, hands-on 14-week workshop designed to introduce talented high school first-years, sophomores, and juniors to the process of digital game development, tabletop game design, and understanding game history and the game industry.
The program is free to participants who are able to commute to the NYU Game Center's facilities in Downtown Brooklyn. The workshop will introduce students to the methods, tools and principles used in developing digital games. Over the course of the 14 weeks, students will work alone and in groups to create a series of digital prototypes or ‘sketches’, culminating in a final polished game building on the lessons learned in the earlier sketches. This is a hands-on, primarily lab-based workshop, and so the focus is on learning-by-doing rather than on reading and discussion alone. Tisch recruits and encourages applications from students from all backgrounds, including those from lower socio-economic backgrounds and those from groups underrepresented within the game industry. Up to 16 students will be selected to participate in the program.
The workshop will also introduce students to tabletop game design and concepts, as well as help students understand, talk about, and write about games within critical and cultural frameworks. There will be a focus on learning effective collaboration and communication techniques, consensus building and decision-making, and working creatively in a team.
