The Studio Placement Process
Upon acceptance into NYU Tisch Drama and after a student deposits with the intention of attending, they are placed into one of eight different primary studios to begin intensive conservatory training towards a robust artistic foundation. Students remain in their primary studios for two full years (four consecutive semesters). It is important to note that our applicants are applying to NYU Tisch Drama and not to a particular studio. Studio placement is a rigorous committee process that considers both the strengths of the applicant and the areas in need of growth. The studio placement decision lies exclusively with the department.
If accepted, Production & Design candidates, along with Directing candidates, will automatically be placed in their respective programs. For accepted Acting and Musical Theatre candidates, NYU Tisch Drama will decide where they will be placed for their primary training. Musical Theatre candidates will first be considered for placement in our musical theatre program at the New Studio on Broadway. If they are assessed as a good fit, we will place them there. If not, they will automatically be considered for placement in one of the other acting studios. (The exception to this is if they identify themselves as “Musical Theatre Only” candidates.)
The eight primary studios are listed below. These include our acting studios and our studio which focuses exclusively on production and design. Please note our directing program is housed at the Playwrights Horizons Theater School and our concentrated musical theatre training program lives at the New Studio on Broadway.
