Beau Bailey Glazier
Class of 2024
Your beautiful artwork greets everyone walking onto the Collaborative Arts floor. Can you tell us about it? Who are these characters you made?
They are kooky friends and collaborators. I haven’t given them names–which is unusual for me–so their visitors can give them names. Tildo, Francis, and Meatballs? You tell me!
Beau's Wall Installation
You use a lot of found materials in your work. What is your process for sourcing and selecting them?
For the installation on the 4th floor, I used deadstock fabric from a panty company and free CraigsList maternity pillows for the stuffing. I don’t really have a process for selecting or using materials, I just try to find the cheapest, most environmentally-conscious options. Almost all of the materials I use are recycled (except for the fabric dye and paint).
What are you working on now?
I always have a couple little beings I’m making. Some I whittle but most of them I hand sew. They are my little babies and they have a lot of personality. In terms of larger projects, I am working on a mini art gallery for Collaborative Arts so other students can showcase their tiny artwork.
You are also pursuing a minor in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Studies (CAMS) at NYU. How is it balancing a minor with your CA requirements?
CAMS has so many delicious classes and I want to take most of them (if only I had two or three Beaus). Last semester I took my first CAMS class, "Sex Matters." Every moment of class I felt delighted. Now I’m taking "The Science of Play and Creativity" and I feel equally as delighted. I want to devote as much time as I can to making my art, but it’s important I attend to all my curiosities. My academic practice influences my creative one and vice versa.
If you could learn something new, what would it be?
I’ve always wanted to learn the harp. Perhaps I will make one soon. I also want to start welding because I’d like to enlarge my artwork and make furniture.
