Rosalind Lichter

Rosalind (“Roz”) Lichter is a business lawyer specializing in entertainment law, executive employment compensation, and corporate transactions. Her entertainment practice involves all aspects of film, book publishing, television, copyright, licensing, and the Internet.

Ms. Lichter’s firm is located at the center of New York City’s film and creative community, at the Tribeca Film Center. She has served as production counsel for films distributed by both major and “mini” distributors, such as Sony Pictures Classics, Paramount, and Warner Brothers. In addition she has served as the lawyer on many films in connection with the films’ distribution strategies working closely with sales representatives; Currently she is production counsel and producer on the animated short, “My Depression, A Picture Book” an animated short for HBO, which aired on HBO in July 2015 and based on Elizabeth Swados’ book of the same name starring Sigourney Weaver; Steve Buscemi and Fred Armisen; counsel to Mary Mapes whose life story: “Truth” debuts in October 2015 with Cate Blanchette and Robert Redford; counsel to Mark Hogencamp whose life rights were purchased by Universal and Robert Zemeckis; counsel to “Shelved” Produced by Mariska Hargitay and Trish Adlesic about the rape kit backlog; counsel to the Havana Motor Club” a documentary Tribeca 2015; counsel to “Speed Sisters”- a documentary at Hot Docs 2015; counsel to Ash Mayfair’s directorial feature debut; counsel to “Living for 32” about the survivor of The Virginia Tech massacre produced by Maria Cuomo; “Gasland 2” directed by Josh Fox for HBO with its premiere at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival.; These films are among the long list of feature films and award-winning documentaries Ms. Lichter has counseled. Ms. Lichter is counsel to Augenblick Studios an animation company whose clients include among others MTV and Nickelodeon and Whale rock; and has counseled talent agreements in the unscripted television arena (including “Storm Chasers” and “Cakeboss”). Ms. Lichter serves as counsel to authors, screenwriters, directors and business professionals. Recently she represented Dr. Margaret Cuomo in her publishing deal with Rodale: “A World Without Cancer”. Ms. Lichter has transacted many film-related deals not only in New York, but also in Los Angeles, London, and Canada. During Ms. Lichter’ s 30 years of legal experience, she has structured mergers and acquisitions for privately held companies; financing for various film, and television, productions; and financing for joint ventures and other businesses unrelated to entertainment. Her many other clients include, Elizabeth Swados, BJ Perlmutt; Avi Goldstein; Jimmy Breslin; Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Donald Margulies, Dara Bratt, Sasie Sealy, Alexis Gambis, Maria Cuomo, Trish Adlesic, (Producer Gasland 1 and 2) Carol Smith (publisher of Harpers); Jonathan Van Meter (Vogue); Ronnie Eldridge (former City Council woman); Amy Gross (former Editor in Chief, “O” Magazine) Lisa Kogan (humorist and Editor at “O” Magazine); and Mx Justin Vivian Bond (cabaret and Broadway).

With respect to employment compensation, Ms. Lichter has represented executives in many industries including magazine publishing, securities, the motion picture business, architecture, and other privately and publicly owned companies. This part of her practice includes the negotiation of severance packages, as well as employment agreements for senior level executives.

In addition to her full time practice, Ms. Lichter was an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University in New York City from 1991 through 2005, where she taught Entertainment Law. She is currently an adjunct professor at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where she teaches in the graduate and undergraduate film divisions. In 2005 Ms. Lichter was a juror at the Tribeca Film Festival. Ms. Lichter has served on the boards of New York Women in Film, and the Creative Coalition. She is a graduate of Syracuse University, was a fellow of the National Endowment of the Humanities, and received her Juris Doctorate degree from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University. Currently, Ms. Lichter is a member of the Association of the Bar, City of New York and completed a three-year term as Chair of the Entertainment Law Committee. She is currently on the Copyright Committee of the Association of the Bar, City of New York.
