The Honors Program in Theatre Studies

Hand with light

Under the direction of Professor Carol Martin, the Honors Program in Theatre and Performance Studies gives students the opportunity to think critically about provocative theatre topics in seminars of no more than 15 students. Taught by leading faculty in the Department of Drama, the special-topic 4-credit Seminars feature focused intellectual exchange among students and faculty. New Seminar topics each semester enable individual students to take several Seminars during their time in the Department of Drama. Seminars include an exciting wide range of methodologies, texts, theories, and performances. Students can apply to write an Honors Thesis after receiving a grade of “B+” or better in two Seminars.

  5. Send your application to the instructor of the Seminar with a copy to John Dietrich - john.dietrich@nyu.edu.

Selection Process
Instructors select students based on stated interest in the subject matter, the writing sample, and interest in research.
Notification
You will receive a reply to your application by the end of the semester. Because individual registration dates occur before seminar acceptance dates, students are advised to register for an alternative 4-credit course that can be dropped once the student is admitted to a Seminar.
Questions about the Honors Program can be addressed to the Director of the Honors Program, Professor Carol Martin - cm7@nyu.edu.

Honors Thesis Application Instructions

Honors Thesis is a 4-credit course in which students research and write a 35–40-page original research thesis over the course of a semester under the mentorship of a faculty member in weekly meetings. Honors Certificates are awarded at the annual Drama Department’s Awards Ceremony in the spring semester. Thesis deadlines for submitting a completed Honors Thesis are December 10 in the fall semester and April 25 in the spring semester.

You can apply after completing two or more Honors Seminars with grades of B+ or better.

Honors Thesis applications should include the following:

  • Your name and graduation date.
  • The titles, grades, and instructors of the Honors Seminars you have taken.
  • A 200-word research proposal.
  • Applications to write an Honors Thesis should be made during the enrollment period.
  • Students with a thesis advisor and an approved proposal should contact john.dietrich@nyu.edu to enroll.

Ask a full-time faculty member in the Department of Drama working in the area of your intended research if they would serve as your thesis advisor. Thesis advisors decide the theatre studies designation of the Honors Thesis course—Geography, Histories, Topics, or Praxis. For questions about the designation, consult with the Director of Theatre Studies, alisa.zhulina@nyu.edu

University regulation stipulates that the work for one course cannot be used for credit in another course.

Carol Martin, Director of the Honors Program at carol.martin@nyu.edu.
